IMT Online: IPO check by plate, foreign licence exchange & vehicle certificate

Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes · imtonline.pt

IMT is Portugal's mobility and transport authority. For a used-car buyer, the relevant online services cover vehicle and inspection records, homologation for imported vehicles and driving-related procedures. Note: if you see 'IMT' in a property context, it means something different — the property transfer tax, handled through the Portal das Finanças.

What you can do there

  • Vehicle and inspection information: check the status of the periodic inspection (IPO) of a vehicle registered in Portugal.
  • Homologation (reconhecimento) for vehicles brought from abroad — a required step before a foreign car can be Portuguese-registered.
  • Driving-related procedures: licences, including the exchange of a foreign driving licence for a Portuguese one.
  • Reference information on vehicle categories, requirements and authorised inspection centres.

Questions people ask

Does IMT tell me a used car's history?

IMT Online covers vehicle and inspection data. For the registered owner, charges and seizures, the official source is Automóvel Online (IRN). Between them, these portals let you verify the registration side of the car — but they do not replace a mechanical inspection by a trusted workshop.

How often must a car pass the IPO inspection?

For ordinary passenger cars, the first periodic inspection is generally due four years after first registration, then at regular intervals that become annual as the car ages. Intervals differ for other vehicle categories, so confirm the date for a specific car on IMT Online or with an authorised inspection centre.

What documents does IMT usually ask for?

Typically identification, NIF, proof of address or residence and the document related to the request (for example your current driving licence, or the vehicle's foreign registration papers for homologation). The exact list depends on the procedure — always use the checklist shown on IMT Online for your case.

How much do official vehicle certificates cost?

Fees are set by the official services and change over time. Check the current price on Automóvel Online (registration certificate) and IMT Online before you request it — we do not publish amounts that could become outdated.

I'm importing a car into Portugal. What is the IMT's role?

A vehicle brought from abroad generally needs national homologation or type-approval recognition before it can be registered in Portugal, and this is handled through IMT. The taxes on importation (ISV and registration-related taxes) are handled separately through the Portal das Finanças. Imported-vehicle cases have many variables, so it is worth confirming each step on the official portals before committing to a purchase.

Why does 'IMT' also appear in property pages?

In property, IMT stands for Imposto Municipal sobre Transmissões — the transfer tax a buyer pays before the deed. It has nothing to do with the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes; it is calculated and paid through the Portal das Finanças.

Can Decide Portugal do these steps for me?

No. We are independent decision support — we read listings, structure the facts and link you to the official portals where each step is done. The registration, homologation and tax steps are carried out by you or a professional you authorise.

Quick step-by-step

Check IPO inspection validity

  1. Open IMT Online (imtonline.pt) and look for the vehicle / inspection consultation service.
  2. Enter the registration plate (matrícula) shown on the car.
  3. Compare the result with the inspection sheet (ficha de inspeção) the seller gives you.

Check charges or seizures

  1. IMT Online does not show ownership charges — use Automóvel Online (IRN) for that.
  2. Request the vehicle registration certificate (certidão de registo automóvel) with the plate.
  3. Confirm the registered owner matches the seller and look for reserva de propriedade, penhoras or other charges.

Exchange a foreign driving licence

  1. Check on IMT Online whether your licence country requires an exchange (EU/EEA licences are generally recognised).
  2. Prepare your licence, identification, residence document and NIF; IMT lists the exact documents per case.
  3. Submit the request through IMT Online or an IMT service desk and keep the receipt as proof.
