IMT is Portugal's mobility and transport authority. For a used-car buyer, the relevant online services cover vehicle and inspection records, homologation for imported vehicles and driving-related procedures. Note: if you see 'IMT' in a property context, it means something different — the property transfer tax, handled through the Portal das Finanças.

- Vehicle and inspection information: check the status of the periodic inspection (IPO) of a vehicle registered in Portugal.

Questions people ask
Does IMT tell me a used car's history?
IMT Online covers vehicle and inspection data. For the registered owner, charges and seizures, the official source is Automóvel Online (IRN). Between them, these portals let you verify the registration side of the car — but they do not replace a mechanical inspection by a trusted workshop.
I'm importing a car into Portugal. What is the IMT's role?
A vehicle brought from abroad generally needs national homologation or type-approval recognition before it can be registered in Portugal, and this is handled through IMT. The taxes on importation (ISV and registration-related taxes) are handled separately through the Portal das Finanças. Imported-vehicle cases have many variables, so it is worth confirming each step on the official portals before committing to a purchase.
Why does 'IMT' also appear in property pages?
In property, IMT stands for Imposto Municipal sobre Transmissões — the transfer tax a buyer pays before the deed. It has nothing to do with the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes; it is calculated and paid through the Portal das Finanças.
